How did you spend Christmas?

Posted by austenfan at 12/28/2009 10:34:00 PM 2 comments
As for me, we just mostly stayed at home with our relatives, ate and well, drank a little. We, er, I sang a little karaoke - mostly Michael Learns to Rock songs (they do guy songs and I'm a girl but don't ask why) - my cousins pretended like I'm damaging their eardrums. Yes, pretended - cause although I may not be a good singer, I do think I sing, ehem, quite well. :p Ok, enough of that.
And oh, we also did a Kris Kringle (did a Kris Kringle - does that sound right?) and I got a cute shirt. :)

How about you people? What did you do on Christmas? I really envy those who went out of town (or the country) as it's been a long time since I have been in a vacation trip. :) So, if you recently had one, do tell me where you went and how it was! And if you've just been to Australia, can you tell me if these perth hotels and hotels in brisbane really look as good as they do in pictures? :)

Wordology (2)

Posted by austenfan at 12/26/2009 05:20:00 PM 3 comments
Wordology is a weekly feature here wherein I introduce a word - any kind of word that's original and fun! Well, the fun part is optional, it can be anything, really.

snooch n. a person who just wants to lie in bed all day to sleep, read, watch, or do whatever said person wants

Saturdays always turn me into a snooch!

How about YOU? Care to tell me a new word? :)

TV shows - gimme some suggestions!

Posted by austenfan at 12/26/2009 04:42:00 PM 0 comments
I'm not much of a TV addict these days, but I still very much enjoy watching TV shows. Comedy, romance, suspense/thriller, it doesn't matter which as long as I get to like it. But please don't recommend Glee to me. I have nothing against the show. I've even seen a portion of it and liked it, but with all these constant ravings about it, I find myself not the least bit curious to find out what the fuss is all about. I know, I know. When had a show or a book's being overhyped stopped me before, right? By that, I meant Twilight and Gossip Girl. And lots of others that I can't remember right now. But I would have to wait for months before the new episode of Gossip Girl. And yes, I'm extremely glad that Chuck will again begin airing come January 10 (am I right?) but that's still so far away!

I've stumbled upon a new show, the Lost City Raiders, which is set in 2048 and in a world that's been majorly affected by global warming. Actually, it sounds kinda scary... but also very interesting. I might have to watch it just to see how the director envisioned such a scenario. [I really hope it's not as unrealistic as 2012]. Any other suggestions? :)

Of course, as you can see from my previous blog entry, I also watch I anime so I'm definitely looking for new and good anime shows! It's such a bummer that our cable provider doesn't have Animax. Hence, I'm missing out on great Animax anime shows like Gurren Lagann and a lot more! Or maybe we do have Animax but I just can't figure out on which channel it is? Hmm. Anyway, any other really good anime suggestions?

Anime Nostalgia(ish)

Posted by austenfan at 12/22/2009 10:17:00 PM 2 comments
I know I’ve said before that I used to be addicted to watching anime shows before. What you didn’t know is that I used to collect stuff related to my fave anime shows too! By stuff, I mean anything and everything that has their pictures on it. I even found some playing cards from my anime stash [bought years ago, of course].

Yuyu Hakusho (also known as Ghost Fighter here in the Philippines) - one of my favorite anime shows of all time

I was so much of an anime junkie back then that I remember buying a Yuyu Hakusho manga (the pages were colored!) - written using Japanese characters! I know! You can call me crazy, I'll forgive you. LOL. That would have been fine if I had someone who could translate the comics for me. If I'd known about it, maybe I could have used an online service to do the translation for me. But as it was, I didn't have a handy translator back then so I had to content myself with looking at the pictures and trying to imagine what was going on with the story! I had a pretty good (and creative) imagination back then so I didn't really regret buying the manga all that much. :)

*Sigh* Those were the days. Now I'm too busy to have time to watch (and look out for) new episodes of anime. I think the last one I watched was the Vampire Knight series... any good recommendations? :)

Wordology (1)

Posted by austenfan at 12/19/2009 02:11:00 PM 2 comments
Every Saturday, I'll be blogging about a word - a new word (created by me, of course). It can be a noun, verb, adjective, interjection... anything, as long as its new. :)

*This was inspired by a contest that I joined (the mechanics were the same)*

Ok, so for the first word...

prook v. to pick your next read among a pile of books

Will you help please help me prook?

Ok, I know, it's a lame first word. I promise to think of a better one next time!

What do you think of this meme? and the name, Wordology? Also, do you guys want to join in (the fun)? LOL. :)

Book Lovers and Book Stores

Posted by austenfan at 12/10/2009 12:25:00 PM 3 comments
I am a book lover. And most of the time, when I step inside a bookstore, I come out of it with a new book. I don't know why or how, but whenever I'm in a bookstore, I just feel compelled to buy a book before I leave. I'm sure a lot of other book lovers can sympathize with me here. :)

That's all fine and well but it can get really bothersome when I'm trying to save money (what with Christmas fast approaching and all the gifts I need to buy) so I'm making this sort of to-do list for whenever I enter a bookstore (for the next few weeks or so, at least):

  • If you really need to buy a book, just bring enough money for that book alone. That way, you avoid making impulsive purchases.
  • Stay away from your greatest temptation (Eh?). I mean, if you love romance, it would be best if you can confine yourself to the mystery/thriller section. Or if you really can't resist it...
  • Make sure that you only look at the titles. Make a list of the books that caught your interest, go home, mull it over and try to decide if you really do want to read those book(s).
  • Or if you see a lot of books that you think you'd just LOVE and you really can't help but buy them right away for fear of not seeing them again when you go back the next time, just try to pick your favorite among the bunch. Or maybe your two favorites, at most. Haha.
Ok then. Hope that'll help me (or you). :p

I've been seeing this warning from some of the blogs that I try to visit. I'm sure that if you're a constant blog hopper, you've seen it as well. Here's a screencap:

I don't know if it only shows up in you're using Google Chrome as your browser (like me). And I have no idea what causes the malware... maybe a certain widget or image? Hopefully, I don't have it on this blog. :)

But if you ever see this warning while trying to visit this blog, do inform me right away! Then again, how can you inform me without proceeding to the blog after seeing the malware warning?...

Check your blogs, guys 'n gals! You never know... :)

Things that make me go *Argh*

Posted by austenfan at 12/03/2009 11:41:00 AM 0 comments
1. Trying to watch Gossip Girl (or any other show) via streaming while using our dorm's super slow internet connection. (I'm actually doing this right now. Haha.)

2. Going to a bookstore and finding out that the book I saw there the last time I was there is not there anymore!

3. Having a cold. I'm sure you know why. I feel bad. I look bad. My voice sounds bad! Btw, I'm taking Sinupret right now as it seems to work best. Still, any suggestions? Meds or homemade treatment or whatever? :)

4. Why Bookdepository dot com does not include Philippines in the list of countries that they ship to. Imagine, FREE shipping! Plus, online shopping is cheaper! Argh.

5. Finding out that my phone's battery is on its way to ballooning out due to overcharging. (Not that I'm surprised, as it's been with me for 3 years now.)

*back to watching, er, waiting. :)

Got my attention, it did.

Posted by austenfan at 11/28/2009 09:37:00 PM 0 comments
During one of my classes (the name of which I will not divulge as my instructor might try to do a random Google search and end up here at my blog), as I was conversing with my friend (as usual), our instructor suddenly flashed this image showing the Philippines' gold resources. Naturally, I was intrigued. Imagine, all that gold hidden somewhere, just waiting to be unearthed! I mean, what if heaps of gold are just sitting beneath our houses as we speak? :p

Not that I'm an expert on these things or whatever. I guess searching the world wide web for information on gold would be a good idea.

Surprisingly, there are actually a lot of different websites about gold. There's this certain site where you can find different facts about gold that I'm sure you've never heard of before. I found out that there are different types of gold, and they, of course, also differ in prices. I read that the Gold American Eagle is the most sought-after gold coin. I'm not really sure why, but it's probably due to its appearance - properties like luster or something. There were these types of gold from China and Australia. I'm not really sure but I think I've heard somewhere that the gold from the Philippines aren't really of top quality. Of course, I could be wrong.

The site also offers advice on proper gold investment. I know, right? There's such a thing as that? Though I guess, I could see why that would be necessary. After all, it is expensive. And I foresee it becoming more expensive in the future. Hmm. I might want to invest on gold myself some time. That is, when I have the money to invest. :)

I LOVE my birthday presents!

Posted by austenfan at 11/23/2009 10:39:00 PM 5 comments
For those of you who didn't know (which probably equates to all of you), I celebrated my birthday sometime last week. And I am just simply ecstatic with these two presents I got from my parents! :)

YESSSS! I now own a Fully Booked discount card, which gives me 10% off on cash purchases and 5% on credit card purchases. Lalalalalalala.

And my Twilight poster... framed!!!! It doesn't look like it in the picture, but it's actually quite big. It's situated right across my bed, which is kinda creepy when you think about it. Haha.

Turning 20 and leaving teenage land wasn't that bad after all. I got these awesome gifts and a lot of warm greetings and wishes!

Way off topic:

I have been getting a lot of spam comments lately, it's a good thing I've turned on comment moderation. So... I just delete those cause really, nobody likes spam! Hope you understand!

Things to do this (coming) holiday season

Posted by austenfan at 11/22/2009 09:23:00 PM 0 comments
Yeah, it's a bit early to make plans but well, plans are supposed to be that way, right? :)

Anyway, I don't really plan on doing something new. I'd probably just stay at home and spend time with my family. Then, come December 25, we'd visit my grandparents, uncles/aunts, and cousins to spend Christmas together. Very traditional, but always fun!

But if I had (a lot) more money, I would definitely go the extra mile. Maybe I'd gift myself with a dozen or so books. Or maybe we could go on a trip... to the Myrtle Beach Resort! I just checked out their site and found out that Myrtle Beach Resorts definitely have one of the nicest amenities I've ever seen. Well, not that I've seen many. :p I don't usually enjoy going to beaches (I prefer pools. Yep, I know I'm boring.) but these Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Resorts sure have me raring to go! Maybe I don't even have to actually go to the beach. I could just stay inside one of the rooms in the Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Resort. It seems like a fine way to spend the day - getting room service, massages, or even just spending the whole day watching TV!

Now I'm wondering if I just made actual plans or just daydreaming about. LOL.

I'm taking a break from this (almost) 3-hour period of pointless net surfing and blog hopping. So I made this sort of meme. Ok, here goes!

Last food I ate:

Tuna sandwich. If you've been reading my blog, you'll know I'm kind of on a diet. Emphasis on the kind of. :p

Last song I heard:

Anything But Ordinary by Avril Lavigne. This track is included in Avril's first album, Let Go. Has anyone heard it?
And will someone agree with me that this album is her finest work? Not that I've bought her latter album/s. But I've heard some of the songs, and they just can't compare with those in Let Go.

Last book I read:

Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison. This one is HILARIOUS. YA and chick lit fans, try it! I'm still reading Uglies by Scott Westerfeld... and I'm still not sure what to make of it. Hmm.

That's it! Feel free to join in if you like. Er, as if. I'm not even sure anyone is reading this. :)

My Twilight obsession is back

Posted by austenfan at 11/12/2009 11:30:00 PM 2 comments
Yep, it's back. And it led me to buy this.

And yes, that is my left hand over there. :)

What I really wanted were the free trading cards included. I was looking for one w/ RPattz's picture, but I got these instead...

I guess it's pretty obvious which of the two cards made me happy. :p

It's not? Here's a better pic.

Alex Meraz (the guy at the left with the big tattoo) plays Paul, one of the werewolves, in New Moon.

That is a huge improvement over this, by the way.

For those of you who are interested on what the mysterious (not) box contains...
  • Mentos 50 piece-bag
  • Mini Mentos 25 piece-bag
  • Mini Chupa Chups 15 piece-bag
  • 2 New Moon trading cards!
I'm not sure but I think this is only available here in the Philippines.

*I bought mine at Rustan's Supermarket for PHP 102.50

Proofread?... I don't.

Posted by austenfan at 11/09/2009 09:07:00 PM 2 comments
You may have read one of my blog posts which had misspellings everywhere, repeating words (i.e. after after), or even some grammatical errors here and there (though I really hope not!). Well, that's because I don't proofread. Though there are times when I check them after publishing. After which, I end up editing them at least four times. Okay, I'm totally exaggerating here.

I don't know why, but when it comes to proofreading, I'd just get so bored that I'll find myself already clicking the 'Publish Post' button. Proofreading school papers, on the other hand, is a different matter. Well, unless it's an essay written in the Filipino language - I mean, there's no red and green lines from MS Word to help me at all! :p

On a different note... Classes will be starting tomorrow so I'd probably would not be blogging all that much. That's all! Till my next random post!

I (sort of) love basketball.

Posted by austenfan at 11/07/2009 05:24:00 PM 0 comments
I don't seem like the type, but it's true. I watch basketball. I enjoy basketball. I love hearing the fans cheering their hearts out for their team. But here's where the 'sort of' part comes in. I only watch games when people I like (meaning: people I'm crushing on) play. And no other player can entice me into watching basketball better than this guy:

image taken from here

Rico Villanueva aka my favorite[st] player ever! :)

He may not have the best stats right now, but he is the best for me. I love how he plays each game with such passion for playing and winning that you just can't help but cheer him on and root for his team to win. At least, that's how it is for me. :)

I'm really grateful that he got me hooked on basketball. It's AMAZING, especially when you get to watch it live. Seriously.

Not a fan of basketball? Still, try watching your favorite games live! It's a whole new different experience! If you're into football, you can start by buying Notre Dame Stadium Tickets or Soldier Field Tickets. But if you're really not the sporty type, maybe you could just buy some Rosemont Theater Tickets and go watch some concerts or plays to give you that same high feeling!

So much for my weight loss plan

Posted by austenfan at 11/06/2009 11:03:00 PM 0 comments
I don't know if I blogged about it before, but at the beginning of the year, I made my customary New Year's resolutions. Resolution, actually. As with every year, I planned to lose at least a few (insert secret # here) lbs by the end of the year. But as usual, it isn't going too well. Actually, it is not going at all. LOL.

So I was thinking, since I have this big and unstoppable appetite for chocolates, ice cream, and cakes, that I should think of other ways to solve my current dilemma. Like I don't know, take up running or jogging? Or maybe I could just walk for several minutes a day (provided I take with me my running shoes and a pedometer to monitor my performance!).

What do you guys and gals think? :) Can you picture me as the athletic, run-till-you-sweat, energy bar-dependent type? :)

Jane Austen, Why do I love thee?

Posted by austenfan at 9/29/2009 10:49:00 PM 4 comments

Some of you probably already know why I use the username 'austenfan'. Well, for those who don't... I picked it because... I'm a fan, of Jane Austen.

To know more about Jane Austen and her life story, you can take a look at this article from Wikipedia.

Like so many others, I first fell in love with Austen's work through her book, Pride and Prejudice. Who wouldn't right? What with characters like Mr. Darcy - who, I'm pretty sure, still is the ideal man for a lot of romantic saps out there - and the independent and stubborn Lizzy Bennet. After that, I just knew that I had to read the rest of her books. I was so in love with the characters, and this amazing fictional world that she created that I even recall feeling really sad after I've finished reading all of her published novels. To date, Persuasion still remains as my favorite among her books. :)

I guess what I really love about Jane Austen is how her books always seem to end with happy endings. I know, I know, it's so predictable. But that's me, forever the optimist and a hopeless (or hopeful) romantic. Besides, I know that deep down, we're all really silly romantics at heart. :p

I'm Having A Book Giveaway!

Posted by austenfan at 9/14/2009 05:39:00 PM 1 comments
Hi everyone! I'm currently having a giveaway for a signed hardcover copy of Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran over at my other blog.

Here's what you can win:

The marriage of Marc Antony and Cleopatra is one of the greatest love stories of all time, a tale of unbridled passion with earth-shaking political consequences. Feared and hunted by the powers in Rome, the lovers choose to die by their own hands as the triumphant armies of Antony’s vengeful rival, Octavian, sweep into Egypt. Their three orphaned children are taken in chains to Rome, but only two—the ten-year-old twins Selene and Alexander—survive the journey. Delivered to the household of Octavian’s sister, the siblings cling to each other and to the hope that they will return one day to their rightful place on the throne of Egypt. As they come of age, they are buffeted by the personal ambitions of Octavian’s family and court, by the ever-present threat of slave rebellion, and by the longings and desires deep within their own hearts.

The fateful tale of Selene and Alexander is brought brilliantly to life in Cleopatra’s Daughter. Recounted in Selene’s youthful and engaging voice, it introduces a compelling cast of historical characters:

Octavia: the emperor Octavian’s kind and compassionate sister, abandoned by Marc Antony for Cleopatra
Livia: Octavian’s bitter and jealous wife
Marcellus: Octavian’s handsome, flirtatious nephew and heir-apparent
Tiberius: Livia’s sardonic son and Marcellus’s great rival for power
Juba: Octavian’s ever-watchful aide, whose honored position at court has far-reaching effects on the lives of the young Egyptian royals

Selene’s narrative is animated by the concerns of a young girl in any time and place —the possibility of finding love, the pull of friendship and family, and the pursuit of her unique interests and talents. While coping with the loss of both her family and her ancestral kingdom, Selene must find a path around the dangers of a foreign land. Her accounts of life in Rome are filled with historical details that vividly capture both the glories and horrors of the time. She dines with the empire’s most illustrious poets and politicians, witnesses the creation of the Pantheon, and navigates the colorful, crowded marketplaces of the city where Roman-style justice is meted out with merciless authority.

Based on meticulous research, Cleopatra’s Daughter is a fascinating portrait of Imperial Rome and of the people and events of this glorious and tumultuous period in human history. Emerging from the shadows of history, Selene, a young woman of irresistible charm and preternatural intelligence, will capture your heart.

Contest is open WORLDWIDE and it ends on September 19. You can enter here. :)

Facebook: The (Not-So) Latest Craze

Posted by austenfan at 9/10/2009 04:43:00 PM 0 comments
A little product of my being a wannabe writer.

You and 4 other people like this.

You are a foodaholic.

Your royal name is the Good.

Your real age is 14 years old.

If you’re a normal and fun-loving student who regularly lurks the World Wide Web looking for anything and everything you could possibly find, then you’ve probably seen these words at least a dozen times. If you’re the type who just looks in from time to time to see what’s new, you should have seen them (or even one of them) at least once! But if you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, then do yourself (and everyone else) a favor and create a Facebook account already!

So what, you may ask, is Facebook? Basically, it’s another social networking site like so many others out there. For me though, it’s by far the coolest and most successful one to date. What exactly separates it from its predecessor, the hugely popular (and highly spammed) Friendster? A lot, actually. For one, you won’t get something like ‘You have 1 new messages’ over at Facebook. Plus, there are all sorts of quizzes to answer and apps to play if you’re bored and trying to pass time. Up to now, I’m still wondering why Facebookers simply love taking those quizzes which just seem like… utter nonsense (e.g. Quiz: How average is your life? Result: Average). But then again, when you’re bombarded with lab reports and plant design proposals, sometimes even nonsense equates to fun. J

By now, I’m probably starting to sound like a Facebook paid ad to you. I don’t know why, but I like it! And guess what? I’m not the only one who feels that way. At any time of the day, you’d see new friend updates all the time. People are getting way too addicted to it. So much so that a friend of mine even made a wall post 5 minutes after class was dismissed! Unbelievable, really.

Over the years, we’ve seen social networking sites spring up then slowly fade away. Undoubtedly, Facebook’s currently the one ruling that scene. I guess the question is: For how long? Sad, but true. Someday, users are gonna decide that Facebook has become too overcrowded for them and then move on to the next new thing. (I know that you know I'm right!) - :p Or maybe not - Mafia Wars has REALLY strong luring powers. LOL.

I don't like guys who wear black sunglasses. Scratch that. I'm scared of guys who wear black sunglasses, black shirts, and black pants. I'm sorry but... I get it okay. You're bad, you're soooo bad I'd better not talk to you. Or you're saying you're so cool, girls around have nothing better to do than stare at you all day.

Though there are exceptions of course. And this is one of them:

And now for my usual disclaimer on image copyrights and such: the picture is not mine and taken from somewhere around the www. :)

Things I'm Excited About

Posted by austenfan at 8/22/2009 12:14:00 PM 7 comments
1. Post Grad

No, I'm not setting my hopes too high that it'll be very fun and entertaining (though I hope it is). I just want to see Alexis Bledel do something that's sort of like what she did as Rory in Gilmore Girls (w/c I just loved!).

Rory and Logan, Gilmore Girls

Hmm. Wonder what Matt Czuchry's up to nowadays?

2. Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

The 4th book in the Vampire Academy series, which will be out in the US on August 25. Hmm, wonder when local bookstores will be able to release it? Waitaminute, Aug 25?? That's this coming week! *weeeee!*

3. The Van Alen Legacy by Melissa de la Cruz

Another 4th book, this time, from the Blue Bloods series. If I remember it right, it comes out on the first week of October in the US. *Sigh* I miss Jack Force.

4. Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey

Never has any other book intrigued me this much with its title and cover! I've e-mailed Fullybooked twice about it (I can't find it anywhere!) and I've yet to receive a reply saying 'Yes, it's a fantastic book, indeed! We'll get it right away!'... which reminds me, I need to go check my inbox now! :)

No classes this Wednesday for us!

Posted by austenfan at 8/19/2009 11:02:00 PM 11 comments
Since it's Quezon City day and we don't have classes, off we went to the cinemas for The Time Traveler's Wife - and yes, I liked it!

Now, I won't go all, "Aww, the book was SOOOO much better than the movie" (which, of course, is true) cause let's face it. Books are ALWAYS better than their film adaptations. So I'm just gonna skip over that part and say what I really liked about the movie.

First off, I think Rachel McAdams was just the right choice for the role of Clare - looks-wise, acting-wise, you name it. That meeting with Henry at the library was just plain awesome - exactly how I pictured the scene to unfold. I actually think I'm beginning to develop a girl-crush on her! Eric Bana did great as well, I love how he can look young one moment and older the next scene. :)

Though I was looking for maybe just a tinny tiny bit more chemistry (just a really small bit) cause I didn't get that intense, explosive, we-are-so-in-love vibes that I got from Henry and Clare from the book. So I'm not sure if that's to do with chemistry or how the movie was directed.

BTW, I've (obviously) read the book before I watched the movie so I knew how the story went. For those who haven't read yet it but do want to watch it, it can get a bit confusing on some parts and you may miss some key points in the book essential for the build-up of the story's plot. My suggestion? If you have time, read the book first. I'm sure you won't regret it. :)

Where do I get my traffic?

Posted by austenfan at 8/16/2009 07:16:00 PM 5 comments
With my blog's recent transfer to its own domain came the loss of PR and Alexa rank. I guess I have to work more on blog hopping and dropping ECs to get back that traffic. As for the PR, I'd appreciate it if you guys (who have my blog on your blogroll) would update your links. :)

Onto the topic of traffic:

(I grabbed this meme from some of the book blogs I've seen recently.)

Google Analytics is actually a great way to track your blog's visitors (where they come from and how they came about your blog).

I went ahead and looked at the keywords people search for that lead them here, and these made the top ten:

1. hot shot jerry yan
- Hmm, I should probably do more blog posts on Jerry Yan. :)

2. jerry yan
- Like I said.

- I think I did mention the site for a contest I joined.

4. "" too commercial
- Um, what?

5. "let the right one in"
- I think it's a movie that one of my co-bloggers recommended. Hmm, didn't know comments could be searched!

6. adgitize drop page rank
- Okay, I never said this.

So that's what PI 100 is for!

Posted by austenfan at 8/14/2009 09:25:00 PM 2 comments
Obviously, I wasn't able to finish my own challenge. I was supposed to post an entry but there was a sudden power outage just five minutes after I logged on to the net. Then, the next day, I found out that internet here in the Philippines was down due to some undersea cable problem (?). Hmm, wonder if that's somehow connected with the blackout.

So, I'm currently taking up PI 100 this semester. It's like a mandatory subject for all the universities here in the Philippines which is mainly (or all) about our national hero, Jose Rizal. (Though I'm not sure how the other schools call or refer to the subject).

Althroughout high school up until I began taking PI 100 classes, I was one of those people who believe that Andres Bonifacio should have been the national hero. My reasoning was the same as everyone else's (at least, I'd like to think so): that Bonifacio did greater things and sacrificed a lot more than Rizal by being courageous enough to fight for our country. But after every 90 minutes of class, I can feel myself wavering on what used to be a pretty solid belief of mine. I don't know why, but I'm beginning to appreciate Rizal's brilliance more and more nowadays.

Actually, I think they should put that on the course objectives! (i.e. To convince students that Rizal really is worthy of being a national hero) :p

BTW, if you want to know more about our very own Jose Rizal, go watch this film! I will! (Since we're required to do so anyway. :p) Already watched the movie? (I did when way back then, but I can't remember most of it now.) Drop me a comment and let me know how you liked it! :)

It might be short but...

Posted by austenfan at 8/10/2009 10:04:00 PM 6 comments
So this is day 2 of my self-imposed blogging for one week. And since I'm too tired and I really want to sleep already (my eyes are fluttering as I type this), I'll just share a little something from a book I read months ago and which I really liked. :)

We take such pains to be polite. We never say what we mean.

- The Sweet Far Thing (Book 3 of the Gemma Doyle Trilogy) by Libba Bray

So true, don't you think? But of course I'm not saying it's a universal truth or that it applies to everyone and everything we do, but... I know you get my point. :)

This Has Got To Change

Posted by austenfan at 8/09/2009 11:43:00 PM 3 comments
I looked over to my sidebar and saw my blog archive. And yes, it's depressing to see the decreasing pattern on the frequency of my posts. Imagine, I only had 4 entries for the month of July. One per week?! It's really saddening. :(

I started this blog with so much excitement and joy over pouring out my thoughts for the whole world (at least, the blogging world) to see. I remember, I used to log on to the net and check how many visits it had for the day and if someone bothered to comment on one of my entries. But now, I can feel that passion slowly (or maybe even, rapidly) dwindling away. And that's just unacceptable! Though I do have a perfectly valid excuse - that being my overly demanding academic requirements. But still!

Now, I hope that with my new domain comes my renewed love for blogging. Not that it was ever lost, just there hiding somewhere. LOL. With that, I'm challenging myself to blog everyday for one week. Yes, seven straight days. But of course, there will be exceptions, like if our dorm internet connection suddenly went all berserk (which it has a tendency to do). Anyway, the point is I will try to post an entry for one week. Hmm. Hope I do get to do that. Wish me luck! :)

The Hot Ones Are Always Fictional

Posted by austenfan at 8/04/2009 12:40:00 PM 4 comments
Don't you agree?

This blog post was inspired by a group that I joined on Facebook. The first time that I stumbled upon the group, all I could think of was, EXACTLY! Visit the group and you'll find a list of those hothothot fictional characters that the fans are raving about (from books, movies, TV shows, though the list is dominated by anime characters. :p)

Now, I'm making my own list! Okay then! This will be in random order since picking out who's on top would be just too difficult (and will probably take me ages). :)

The hero to protagonist of one of my favorite books, Persuasion. A man of insignificant fortune who came back as a respected and successful naval officer worthy of reclaiming Anne Elliott's love. (I know, it sounds so lame and cheesy when I say it, you'd have to read the book!) :)

The image is actually from the book cover of Captain Wentworth's Diary (which I have yet to read), a spin-off of Austen's novel from Captain Wentworth's perspective.

FITZWILLIAM DARCY or more commonly known as MR. DARCY

from Pride and Prejudice, again by Jane Austen.

He's rich, good-looking, seemingly aloof and arrogant yet totally romantic on the inside! What's not to like? :D

Maximum Ride by James Patterson. If you haven't read this, you are missing A LOT. Quiet, cool, and really cute - Fang is every teen's romantic fantasy! Come to think of it, someone very similar comes to mind...

KILLUA ZOLDICK (not sure about the surname. :p)
Hunter X Hunter. My favorite assassin. Okay, he's the only assassin I like. LOL.

Let's not forget MICHAEL SCOFIELD who's outrageously smart, sexy (thanks to Wentworth Miller!), and just plain unbelievable.

And while we're on the TV world,

CHUCK BASS. Bad-boy extraordinaire. And everyone's favorite GG character, it seems.

And of course, my vampire loves (I have three! Haha.)

JACK FORCE - Blue Bloods
CHRISTIAN OZERA - Vampire Academy

I can't think of who to cast as Jack and Christian so I'll let RPattz do the honors. :)

How 'bout you? Who's on your list? :)

I'm As UnCreative As Can Be!

Posted by austenfan at 7/23/2009 03:30:00 PM 7 comments
So it's that time of the year when we have to practice our smiles and think of clever ways to pose if we want to make our graduation/yearbook pics even a tiny bit interesting. I guess my problem's pretty obvious: I'm at a loss. For possible creative shots. Or shot (I'm still not sure how many shots there are). But then again, there are just those lovely lovely pictures that I'd just love to hmm, mimic (?) :p

Here are some of them:

Audrey Hepburn! A girl can dream, right? :)
Now, if only I can find something like those pearls and that something she's holding (a pipe?)

Very cool, indeed. But where do I get a car? And is it even allowed to do a shoot outdoors? :p

Another cute pic. Though I doubt I could make my hair look all wavy and beautiful and messy-yet-not-really like that. And did I mention the petals?!

If you have any suggestions, just drop me a comment! :)

And before I forget, Frances at Topaz Horizon is hosting another contest. This time, it's for a Moleskine notebook and a P500 GC! For more details, do visit her blog!

I Can't Think of a Title, So Let's Just Call This As It Is.

Posted by austenfan at 7/12/2009 03:53:00 PM 7 comments
You must have noticed that I haven't been blogging as much these last couple of weeks. That's because schoolwork just keeps on coming. And coming. And coming. And coming. I'm not exaggerating, believe me. If that's not enough, on Fridays, I have classes from 7:30am to 5pm (no breaks in between!) :(

Aside from that, I've become addicted to joining book giveaways lately. Go check out my other blog and see for yourself.

So there you have it. If I'm not at school, I'm looking 'round the net for book contests. Or I'm sleeping. :p

So, to anyone who have been visiting this blog for the past few weeks: Sorry for not being to blog hop and drop back EC's. I'll try to visit back in the coming days. :)

I'm the Queen of Typos! *Grumbles*

Posted by austenfan at 7/05/2009 03:48:00 PM 6 comments
I admit it. I've never been proud of my typing skills. When I was in grade school, I used to envy my mom whenever she would look at a copy of whatever she's typing (which were usually my school projects, LOL) and just press down the keys without even bothering to look at both the keyboard and the monitor if she's doing it right. So I asked her how she does that and she said something like, 'You'll be the same when you get older'. Yeah, right. :p

When I was a high school freshman, we were supposed to create our own 'publication' for our computer class. Nothing grand, just something to help you hone your Pagemaker skills. One time, I was typing up an article I made for that when one of my classmates suddenly came over my workplace.

Our conversation:
(translated to English for the benefit of everyone)

Me: (typing)
Classmate: Hey, do you want me to type that up for you?
Me: Huh? Why? Don't you have something else to do?
Classmate: Yeah, but it looks like it'll take you all day to finish that.
Me: (to myself: WTF???????? I can't believe he just said that! (I mean, we weren't even close so I couldn't take that one lightheartedly.) Who does he think he is, he doesn't even type that fast himself! You... You... You just wait! I'll show you!)

Of course I never said any of those things to him. Back then, I was the girl who was always quiet and never got mad at anybody. :)

And so I just said:

(putting on my poker face) No, thanks. I can manage.

Now, I guess my typing abilities have improved a bit, but still not as good as I would have wanted to be.

Just look at what Typing Maniac thinks of me.

Remember that contest I joined? Well, I won. Congrats to me! haha.

It's the first time anyone shipped anything to me, as in solely to me, so of course I was a bit excited and had to take pics. LOL.

So here they are:

And here are the prizes!

Thanks again Frances for the wonderful prizes!

Rain Does This To Me

Posted by austenfan at 6/30/2009 03:49:00 PM 0 comments
Does what?

Make me feel all gloomy and sentimental and... you get the drift.

And what do I do when that happens?

Find something to cheer myself up, that's what!

This is just one of those things.

Superimposing myself there already makes me feel better. LOL.

I should be doing our plant design/research proposal right now but I had this sudden craving to see James McAvoy... so now I'm watching Penelope! Yeah, I've really got to set my priorities straight. But that would be for another time, meanwhile, I'm off to watch some more! :)

Tayong Dalawa --> Prison Break ?!

Posted by austenfan at 6/17/2009 09:15:00 PM 2 comments

There you have it. I'm currently watching Tayong Dalawa and I am telling you, it's beginning to sound eerily like Prison Break. I mean, what is up with shaving the head thing, fellow prisoners bullying the new pretty boy, and the possible escape attempt! Really! And am I just imagining it, or is Gerald Anderson trying to act like Wentworth Miller?! Sorry to all you Gerald lovers out there, but just, jeez.

After Almost A Week

Posted by austenfan at 6/14/2009 12:10:00 PM 2 comments
I'd like to apologize to those who have been waiting for a new entry for the longest time. Haha. As if. I've used the entire week reading reading reading. YA (Young Adult) books mostly. I don't know why but I've only just fully appreciated their beauty now that I'm older. But still, I'm only 19, so I'm still a target reader, right? Right! LOL. If you'd like to join me in my YA fascination, check out my new blog Reality Bites. . . Fiction Does It Better! as I'll try to post new reviews there. :)

Another thing that I've been up to these days is - and I can't believe I'm saying this - playing Mafia Wars on Facebook!

I don't even know what I'm doing most of the time, just completing jobs and picking up fights, but in some unexplainable way, it's fun!

Take a look at my stats:

I know, I'm such a newbie! I need to play more! :)

Some Useful Info on A(H1N1)

Posted by austenfan at 6/08/2009 07:31:00 PM 4 comments
As we probably all know, the opening of classes (college) was moved to June 16. I imagine this caused a lot of whooping and ecstatic cries from fellow students. haha. Strangely (very much so) enough, I wasn't quite thrilled about it. Yep. Strange.

Taking aside that bout of weirdness, I too am pretty scared of catching the A(H1N1) virus. And as usual, when I get really anxious about something, I do what I always do (if possible) and looked it up on the net. :)

In case you're still in the dark when it comes to A(H1N1), here are some helpful facts:

Source: World Health Organization website

  • Avoid touching your nose and mouth.
  • Avoid crowds as well.
  • Make sure to keep your hands thoroughly clean ALWAYS (well, as much as you can).
  • You won't be able to tell the difference between seasonal flu and A(H1N1) unless you get medical help (so if you're experiencing fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache and body ache, I think it's best to get medical assistance immediately!).
And here's a cute poster from the Singapore Polytechnic site:

Let's all stay safe, 'kay? :)
